As Associate Dean for First-Year Students, McLean immerses herself within the world of Ohio Wesleyan’s new students—being with them for meals, study sessions, discussion groups and during the more playful events and campus programs. By doing so, she is prepared to answer the wide-range of academic and student life questions that arise during the transition from high school to college. She also serves as another pair of eyes and ears—a backup—for others who work with First-Year Students.

Professor McLean came to OWU in 1990 and teaches in the Politics and Government Department. Her courses include Conduct of Political Inquiry, Congress and the Legislative Process, the American Presidency, Equality and American Politics, and American Politics and the Mass Media. She is a past recipient of the University’s Shankland Encouragement of Teachers Award.

As a professor, McLean understands continuing to teach helps someone in the administration remain close to the core mission of a liberal arts college. That mission is to equip “students with knowledge, competence, and character for leadership, service and continued learning in a complex and increasingly global society.”

Outside the classroom, she is an avid supporter of OWU’s fine arts, theatre, sports, and student activities in general. Off campus McLean enjoys traveling (she’s been to all 50 states and that’s her in red, kayaking in Alaska). She also enjoys exploring presidential libraries and archives, gardening, and being part of fantasy leagues in baseball and football.
