August StART OWU (Tentative Program and Times)

Move into your Residence Hall.

If you are participating in August StART OWU you may move into your fall residence hall on Tuesday. Go directly to your assigned residence hall to check-in and receive a key to your room, a StART OWU schedule and breakfast ticket to use on Wednesday morning.

10:00 a.m. - Noon August StART OWU Registration (Students and Parents), HWCC (#23) Atrium
Receive StART OWU materials and final schedule.

Health Center Check-In (Students or Parents), Food Court East
Director of Student Health Services, Marsha Tilden (M.S., R.N., C.N.P.) will confirm that your required health records are on file and answer your questions about OWU student health services.

OWU ID/Meal Card (Students), HWCC Room 142
Have your picture taken for your permanent OWU ID/Meal Card. Office open throughout the day.

Course Registration Check-In (Students), HWCC Zook Nook
If you have not submitted course registration materials yet, please go to the Zook Nook to complete and turn-in Course Registration Guide and Advising Information Form.

Check into your fall semester room.
If you haven't done so already, please go to your assigned residence hall for room check-in.

Financial Aid and Student Accounts Check-In (Parents or Students), HWCC (#23) Food Court West

Staff from Financial Aid and Student Accounts will discuss the key programs, procedures and necessary forms for helping you manage your educational-related payments and expenses at OWU. If you miss this presentation, please feel free to stop by the Financial Aid offices on the second floor of Slocum Hall (#17). Walk-in hours are 1:30-4:30 PM. The Cashier’s Office located in the lower level of University Hall (#18) also will remain open until 3:30 PM each day.

12:15 -1:30 p.m. Lunch and Welcome Program (Students and Parents), HWCC (#23) Benes Rooms
Luncheon program for students to meet faculty and students.

Parents may attend. Parent lunch tickets ($15) should be reserved in advance when students register for their StART OWU session. Tickets can be purchased (cash or check) at the StART OWU check-in desk on campus.
1:45 - 3:00 p.m.

StART OWU Sessions - Round 1

  • Foreign Language Placement Tests (Students)
    • Unless exempt, students with two or more years of high school credit in a foreign language (French, German, Latin, Spanish)* are REQUIRED to take a placement exam to determine the appropriate college level of study at which to begin. Even if you plan to study a different language in college, you need to take the exam in case you change your mind once enrolled.

      • *No placement tests at this time for other languages.

        Students NOT REQUIRED to take a language placement test should take the Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (A) during this time.

  • Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (Students) - A
    Beeghy Library, 3rd Floor
    • Mandatory test for all entering first-year students. Designed to measure an individual's critical thinking skills.

  • Great Expectations (Parents), Conrades♦Wetherell Science Center (#10) Room 163
    • This session offers parents insights into the typical classroom environment at OWU. Emphasis placed on discussing faculty expectations regarding student academic performance as well as what students can expect of faculty in and out of the classroom. The session will be informal with many opportunities for questions.
3:15 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. StART OWU Sessions - Round 2

  • CSI: Trip through the Catalog (Students), Various Locations
    • Small Group Meetings with Faculty and Student Registration Guides to explore how to become CSIs: catalog savvy investigators and to discuss your fall semester schedule. Check your Registration Envelopes or the back of your name tag for your specific meeting room assignment.

  • Sagan Academic Resource Center (Parents), Corns (#21) Room 312
    • Staff from the Sagan Academic Resource Center discuss the resources available to help students become independent and competent learners. Overview of Writing Resource Center, Quantitative Skills Center and Learning Disabilities Assistance Center.

4:15 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

  • Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (Students) - B
    Beeghy Library, 3rd Floor
    • Mandatory test for all entering first-year students. Designed to measure an individual's critical thinking skills.

    Students who took a language placement test should take the Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (B) during this time.
  • In the Know: Making the Connection (Parents)
    Beegly Library
    • Library and Information Services (LIS) staff discuss the information and technology available to help students in their educational, personal and professional growth.
5:00 p.m.
August StART ends. Have fun at Orientation which begins on Thursday.
