Q&A

Your Questions Answered

Why attend StART OWU?

Attending StART OWU provides you with an opportunity to interact in a relaxed atmosphere with a core group of faculty, staff, and upper-class students specially trained to answer your questions.

Working in small groups with faculty and student registration guides, you’ll focus on:

  • planning and registering for your fall semester schedule
  • learning about distribution requirements
  • taking language placement exams
  • exploring various majors
  • understanding college academics: syllabi, note-taking, quizzes, essay exams, term papers

You’ll leave campus knowing your fall semester schedule and armed with valuable resources to use when you begin classes on August 25.

Parents also are welcome to attend. In sessions designed just for them they will learn about the academic climate at OWU and what to expect as you begin the transition from home life to campus life.

What are the costs for attending StART OWU in June?

The $100 StART fee is included in your enrollment deposit so there are no additional costs for attending one of the June StART sessions. This non-refundable fee covers your overnight lodging in Smith Residential Hall, meals for your entire stay, and costs for the program and materials.

How do I register to attend a StART OWU session in June?

Beginning April 1, StART registration materials will be sent to students who have been admitted and returned their $400 enrollment deposit to the Admissions Office (due no later than May 1).

In order to ensure we can work in small groups, there is a cap on the number of students permitted to attend any one session. Sessions fill-up quickly so we urge you to register as soon as you can to ensure a spot in the session of your choice. The deadline for StART registration is Friday, May 23.

Can parents attend StART OWU in June?

Parents are encouraged to participate in StART OWU. In parents only sessions, they will learn about the academic climate at OWU and what to expect as you begin the transition from home life to campus life.

Parents should arrange for separate lodging nearby. As for meals, they are encouraged to attend the welcome lunch on the first day. Tickets are $15. If they would like to join you for dinner, they also can purchase a dinner ticket for $15 per person. Please indicate on your StART registration form the number of tickets you want to reserve.

Note: There are no planned programs for siblings.

Will there be free time to mingle with my classmates?

Yes! During both the late afternoon and evening of day one you’ll have time to relax with other students in the class of 2012. On day two, we invite you to stop by the Beeghly Library Internet Cafe to meet informally with your classmates.

What if I can’t attend StART OWU in June?

We understand that for a variety of reasons, a few students can not attend one of the four StART OWU sessions in June. If you are one of these students, you should indicate so on the StART OWU registration form. Once we receive this information (due no later than May 23) we will send written materials to help you select your classes. Please review these materials carefully. Faculty and student registration guides will be available by phone or by E-mail to answer your questions.

Your next step is to complete the Course registration Guide and the Fall Semester Course Selection Worksheet. Please return these forms no later than July 7 so we can begin creating your schedule starting July 14.

Also plan to be on campus by 11 A.M. Wednesday, August 20 (the day before Orientation begins) so you can take placement exams and finalize your fall schedule.

Again, if at all possible please try to complete your schedule at one of the June StART OWU sessions. It’s during these sessions where you will have a chance to interact with Registration Guides without the distractions of also moving-in, saying goodbye to family, participating in Orientation programs, buying books, and starting classes.

All of these activities are exciting and important. That’s why if you can concentrate on the academic parts in June, you’ll have more time during Orientation for setting up your room, making connections with your classmates, and adjusting to campus life.

What are the costs for attending StART OWU in August?

There is no additional cost for attending August StART as the $100 StART fee was included in your enrollment deposit. This non-refundable fee covers the costs for course registration materials and mailings plus the on-campus program in August.

Note: International Students should contact Grace Poling (ggpoling@owu.edu) or Darrell Albon (djalbon@owu.edu) for more information regarding their attendance at StART OWU in August.

How do I register to attend the August StART OWU session?

Beginning April 1, StART registration materials will be sent to students who have been admitted and returned their $400 enrollment deposit to the Admissions Office (due no later than May 1).

Can parents attend StART OWU in August?

Yes, parents may attend parents’ only workshops and Orientation activities during this time. They are invited to attend the Welcome Luncheon on Wednesday, August 20. Tickets are $15 each. Be sure to indicate on your StART registration form the number of tickets you want to reserve.

What’s the difference between StART OWU and Orientation?

Whereas StART OWU focuses on easing your transition to the academic demands of college, the Orientation program helps you make an equally important transition to student life outside the classroom. Orientation programs focus on introducing you to OWU’s culture, its traditions, and its expectations for students who chose to attend a residential, liberal arts campus.

New Student Orientation will take place just before classes begin, starting late in the afternoon on August 21.
